The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine of the University Hospital Brno and Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University had several reasons to celebrate the beginning of this October.

Cell therapies can only be used for treating diseases if there are enough cells of therapeutic quality. Research of the research team of Dr. Aleš Hampl was acknowledged by the Minister of Health for solving the project entitled “Epithelial Tissue Engineering: Cells and Protocols for Regenerative Medicine”. The project used human pluripotent stem cells to produce functional somatic cells and to develop strategies for the treatment of certain vascular and lung diseases.

An academic clinical trial phase I/II for patients with rare congenital epidermolysis bullosa (also known as butterfly wing disease) is about to start in the Brno University Hospital. Thanks to the cooperation with Masaryk University and the patient organisation DEBRA ČR, patients will receive cell therapy developed over several years by experts from the Advanced Cell Immunotherapy Unit (ACIU) at the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine.

Faculty of Medicine has signed the Global Charter in June 2021 and initiated collaboration with Stanford University as an associated member of the SPARK Translational Research Program and SPARK Global network, a partnership of over 60 academic institutions worldwide with a common goal to advance academic biomedical research discoveries closer to clinical practice.

On Monday, 20th September, the world-renowned plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahač visited the new Simulation Centre for education of future doctors and the premises of the University Campus in Brno-Bohunice. He presented a lecture titled “Until the Last Stitch” at the grounds of Faculty of Medicine. Professor Pomahač visited Brno on the occasion of the II. Visegrad Plastic Surgery Congress.

Throughout last year, over two thousand students of General Medicine and Dentistry at the FM MU tried out lessons in the Simulation Centre, or the so-called training hospital, for the first time. The most modern Simulation Centre in Europe celebrated its first birthday in September.

On Tuesday, 14^th September, 19 major institutions joined the Memorandum of Cooperation for Computerization of Healthcare and Telemedicine. A signing ceremony took place in the Mayor’s Lounges at the Old Town Hall.

A jury of experts from the Building of the Year contest nominated the building of the Simulation Centre FM MU as one of the 33 best buildings in the whole of Czech Republic. The announcement of the big finale will take place on Monday, 18^th October. You can support SIMU in the public voting now.
