Social safety
The Faculty of Medicine promotes a safe environment for students and staff and contributes to social safety by providing clear safety policies and procedures, providing training in safety, mental health, violence and harassment prevention, promoting mental health, creating an inclusive culture, building safe infrastructure, and emphasizing a level playing field for students and staff.
Social safety can be defined as the ideal state of an environment in which the behaviour and actions of all present are naturally guided by the principles of collegiality, integrity, equality, respect, openness and consideration for others, and where any form of unwanted behaviour, intimidation, aggression, bullying or discrimination is considered unacceptable, regardless of whether they are students or staff.
Unwanted behaviour is defined as any form of unsolicited verbal or non-verbal behaviour that threatens or harms the mental or physical integrity of the person at whom it is directed. This most commonly includes aggression, sexual harassment and other gender-based violence, discrimination or bullying. However, the list cannot be closed and the unwanted behaviour categorised. The perception of social behaviour is individual and what one person perceives as undesirable is not necessarily perceived by another person. At the same time, there is an overlap and intermingling of different types of unwanted behaviour.
