Globally Unique Course for Plastic Surgeons Hosted at the Department of Anatomy FM MU
As a parallel activity of the second year of the Visegrad Plastic Surgery Congress, the flap dissection course took place on the premises of the Faculty of Medicine MU.
Ten lecturers and twenty-eight participants from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Turkey and Ukraine took part in an international course on flap surgeries for the doctors with specialisation in reconstructive microsurgery. It was held on the premises of the Department of Anatomy of the FM MU on the 14th-16th September 2021. This course was led by Dr. Libor Streit as the continuation of the flap dissection courses held regularly in Brno in the 80’s and 90’s, which have been some of the first of their kind in the world. This international course preceded the II Visegrad Plastic Surgery Congress in Brno.
Flaps are composite tissue units, which can be constructed based on knowledge of their vascular anatomy providing nourishment, most often via nourishing pedicle. They are used for covering defects, for example during reconstruction of missing parts of the face or for a breast reconstruction after mastectomy. The participants of the course were able to broaden and improve their knowledge thanks to the top-class lecturers.
The biggest names among the lecturers were Dr. J.P. Hong from South Korea and Dr. Pietro Berrino from Italy. Co-organizers of the course were the Faculty of Medicine MU and the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery of St. Anne’s University Hospital. “The course was evaluated very positively by both participants and lecturers, mainly due to the well-prepared programme and an advanced technique of coloured silicone vascular injections emphasizing the vascular anatomy of the flaps and facilitating the dissection. From this point of view, the course was unique in the world. Due to the huge interest, the course will be continued the next year.” Dr. Marek Joukal, the Head of the Department of Anatomy assessed.
