Medical students supported pediatric oncology by selling the Gold Ribbon
For one day, the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University hosted a fundraiser for the Krtek Foundation, which supports the development of personalized treatment for pediatric patients. The fundraiser, which raised over 8,500 CZK, was organized by general medicine students at our faculty, along with the foundation's mascot. The plush mole managed to briefly visit a physiology lecture while spreading hugs during the event.

The event "Days of Pediatric Oncology Brno," held at our faculty, was a success, raising a total of 8,585 CZK in support of the Krtek Foundation for Pediatric Oncology through a transparent account. Donors could also contribute to a sealed collection box, so we do not yet know that amount. All collection boxes will be opened together in the following days. The Days of Pediatric Oncology are taking place from February 15 until Saturday, April 5, 2025, when there will be a festive closing event at the Brno Observatory with a program for the whole family.
“At our faculty, such an event has been held before; last Christmas, there was already one fundraiser, the proceeds of which went to this foundation. It was from this foundation that we were contacted to support the Days of Pediatric Oncology,” says Kateřina Janásková from the event organizers.
This foundation, established in 1999 by Prof. MUDr. Jaroslav Štěrba, Ph.D., the current head of the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at the University Hospital Brno and Vice-Dean for specialized education at the Faculty of Medicine MU, plays an important role in assisting pediatric patients. Thanks to its connection with the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at University Hospital Brno, the foundation can systematically support children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment, enhance personalized medicine options, and provide additional care during treatment and the gradual return to normal life.
All funds raised during the entire event will be used to develop personalized medicine, which takes into account the individual needs of each patient. The Krtek Foundation also invests in modern specialized diagnostics, which are not always fully covered by public funds. It organizes rehabilitation and resocialization stays, provides accommodation for families on the hospital grounds, and offers social and psychological support, home care, and legal counseling.
During the event, the Krtek mascot had the opportunity to "soak up the atmosphere of the medical faculty" and attend a physiology lecture, successfully connecting the academic community with the public and the initiative to help children fight challenging illnesses. This event demonstrated that the collaboration between the academic community, the public, and the Krtek Foundation can contribute to a better quality of life for pediatric patients. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, donated, or contributed in any way to the success of this fundraiser. Throughout the year, it is possible to support the foundation with any amount.
