There are around five hundred paediatric oncology centres across Europe, of which two hundred are certified as European Reference Centres, in simple terms, they are considered "the best". The Department of Paediatric Oncology of the University Hospital Brno and the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University has its own sound among them. It has now officially become a member of the club of the absolute best. As the sixty-eighth in total, the department under the leadership of Professor Jaroslav Štěrba has been certified as an ITCC Centre.

It has thus become part of the elite consortium for innovative approaches in paediatric oncology - Innovative Therapies for Children and Adolescents with Cancer - which is one of the largest collaborative groups in the field of paediatric oncology, bringing together leading paediatric oncology centres, researchers and industry partners from across Europe and beyond.

"This is a very prestigious recognition of the quality of our facility and infrastructure in general. It is the result of several years of efforts by the hospital, the clinic and the faculty," says Professor Štěrba. "In practice, it means that we already have access to the complete European - and now North American - know-how in the field of paediatric oncology and that clinical trials and new drugs for patients will reach us quickly."

Last but not least, the complex interconnection of the research carried out at the Department of Paediatric Oncology of the Brno University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Brno with cutting-edge research carried out in Europe and North America also increases the probability of success in grant competitions. The largest number of ITCC Centres is in the UK, Germany and France (eleven in total), while in the Czech Republic only the University Hospital in Motol in Prague has been able to boast this certification so far.
