In mid-February 2025, Brno hosted a prestigious international neurosurgical conference. The 15th annual Brno Neurosurgical Days, held from 17th to 19th February at the International Hotel, was organised by the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital Brno and Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine under the auspices of the Hospital Director, Dr Ivo Rovný.
Prominent figures in Czech medicine formally opened the conference - the Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, Professor Vlastimil Válek, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University, Professor Martin Repko, the President of the Czech Neurosurgical Society, Professor Martin Sameš, and the main conference organiser, Professor Martin Smrčka from the hosting Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Brno and Faculty of Medicine.
The international attendance emphasised the significance of this professional event - among more than 200 registered participants and exhibitors were numerous leading neurosurgeons from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, Croatia, Bulgaria, Austria, and Slovakia. Their presence significantly contributed to the high scientific standard of the entire conference. Alongside the main medical programme, there was also a successful nursing section.
A highlight of the conference was the gala evening. Professor Christopher Stanley Ogilvy from Harvard University in Boston received honorary membership of the Czech Neurosurgical Society from the Vice-President of the Czech Neurosurgical Society, Professor Martin Smrčka. This award was bestowed upon him for his extraordinary contribution to the development of neurosurgery in Brno and the Czech Republic.
