Researching the Past, Advancing the Future of Medicine

The opportunity to participate in this interesting international conference is open to students, academics, and staff of collecting and research institutions, who can attend the event free of charge.

The conference will be held at the National Technical Museum, Kostelní 42, 170 78 Prague 7, on 17 and 18 April 2024.

Eminent personalities of archaeology and history of medicine have been invited to present the main papers of the conference. The head of the Institute of History of Medicine and Foreign Languages of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University doc. Mgr. Karel Černý, Ph.D. will present a paper on the first vaccination against smallpox. Dr Antonella Pedergnana from the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum in Bolzano, which preserves the mummified body of a man found in ice, known as Ötzi, will present a paper on the history of health and dental care. Dr Nicholas Summerton will give an overview of the findings of ancient researchers carried forward to the present day. Professor Robert Arnott of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, will discuss the insights gained from his years of experience researching and teaching the history and archaeology of medicine.

Students, academics and staff of collecting and research institutions, senior citizens over 65 and disabled card holders are exempt from the admission charge for this event.
