In the second half of January 2025, Professor Tomohiro Inoue from the University of Tokyo visited the Neurosurgical Clinic of Brno University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. On January 14, he delivered a lecture focused on the rare vascular disease Moya-Moya, which is characterised by a disorder in the formation of the brain's vascular network and can lead to ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke. This condition most frequently occurs in paediatric patients.

Professor Inoue was honoured during this occasion by the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Křivan, who presented him with the faculty's commemorative plaque as a visiting professor.

The highlight of his mission were exceptional neurosurgical procedures on January 15-16, during which he operated on two patients aged 14 and 7. For both girls, he performed a unique surgical procedure - a bilateral extra-intracranial bypass as part of direct brain revascularisation. This procedure is exceptional not only in the Czech Republic but also on an international scale. The surgeries were performed on extremely subtle vessels with a diameter of around 1 mm. Despite the high complexity of the procedure, both surgical interventions were successful. The bypasses are fully functional, and both patients are in good health.

The specialised vascular team of the Neurosurgical Clinic was involved in the preparation and implementation of these complex procedures, consisting of: Vilém Juráň, Jiří Fiedler, Ondřej Navrátil, Karel Svoboda, Martin Smrčka, and the Head of the Paediatric Department of the Neurosurgical Clinic, Andrej Mrlian.

Professor Inoue's visit represents a significant contribution to neurosurgical care and international medical collaboration.
