71 new trainers complete the Student as Teacher 3.0 first aid trainer training programme

Simulation-based first aid training will begin its third academic year at SIMU this September. Student lecturers are an essential part of the first aid teaching throughout the course, imparting their knowledge and skills under the guidance of academics.

Student lecturers are prepared for this very demanding way of teaching during the year-long Student as Teacher training programme, which has been organised for the third time this year. While in autumn and winter the future lecturers first attended the distance part consisting of online lectures, e-learning and interactive curricula, in spring and summer they had to attend the practical part, where they repeated during four workshops how to provide first aid and, above all, learned how to teach it. The whole programme ended with a single exam. Their more experienced classmates were also involved in the training of the new lecturers for the second time, and during the workshops they cooperated with the methodologists from the Institute of Simulation Medicine of the FM MU.

As a result, a total of 71 fresh student lecturers will join the ranks of the existing ones. Most of them have been through first aid training at SIMU themselves. This brings the total number of lecturers to over 150, guaranteeing that more than 600 new first-year students in both the Czech and English programmes will receive innovative simulation-based small-group first aid training.

And what do students involved in the programme take away?

"Lots of practical experience, more confidence in providing first aid, the determination to speak in front of people and the desire to pass on my experience to other students and friends who might not know how to give first aid."

"I've got a lot more confidence in giving first aid than I came in with. I've met a lot of great people and I've convinced myself that it's worth leaving my comfort zone and that it's actually been pretty cool."

"Confidence in first aid, more confidence in my speaking, and also knowledge of what teaching should look like so that everyone involved feels comfortable and unafraid to learn new things."

(Anonymous responses from the evaluation questionnaire completed at the end of the programme.)

In September 2022, the Student as Teacher will be launched for the fourth time with an offer of participation in a year's training for an additional 50 students.
