Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology
Doctoral degree in full-time or combined form. The language of instruction is Czech.
The programme can be studied only as a single subject with a specialization (Medical Microbiology and Immunology or Pathology and Forensic Medicine).
What will you learn?
The primary objective of the programme is to prepare the finest specialists in important medical diagnosis disciplines - Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Clinical Immunology, and Clinical Microbiology. The graduates are prepared primarily for clinically focused laboratory research. They will be able to work in diagnostic and research laboratories, as well as being able to perform basic research or practically focused research involving laboratory diagnostics within the commercial sector. The programme consists of 2 primary branches: Pathologic Anatomy and Forensic Medicine as the first branch, the second branch being Clinical Immunology.
The primary research areas are:
Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Immunodeficiency Disorders,
Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Immunity Hypersensitivity Diseases,
Microbial Biofilms in Medicine - Diagnosis, the Clinical Significance, and the Therapy Options,
New Methods of Antimicrobial Therapy, Uses for Bacteriophages, Herbal Extracts, and other substances carrying an antimicrobial effect,
New Methods of Microbial Agent Diagnosis, especially using the Capillary Electrophoresis method and Raman Spectroscopy,
The Study of the Carcinogenesis in Selected Types of Cancer using a wide spectrum of molecular pathology methods,
Prognostic and Predictive Markers for Different Types of Cancer and the Possibilities of Their Application in the Management of Patients with Cancer,
Forensic Alcohology,
Gunshot Wounds,
The primary advantage of the programme is the interlinking of multiple medically-diagnostic disciplines, which allows us to integrally make use of the cooperation between the involved facilities, and that is not only for the purposes of mentoring and methodology but also for the creation of shared projects up to the level of applications for grants. All of the included disciplines are in close continuity with the clinical disciplines, which allows the students to acquire experiences that can be used in applied research. The students have the opportunity to attend academic seminars in their selected disciplines, and their results are then presented through active communication at international conferences.
Practical training
The research practice is primarily conducted in the laboratory training facilities at the FM MU. However, the possibility of gathering experience in external laboratories is also emphasized, and that is both at the national and international level. Besides the laboratory practice, the clinical interpretation of discovered findings is also of significance, along with the active communication with doctors and other medical staff that can use the mentioned findings in their scientific and clinical efforts.
Career opportunities
The graduates of the Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology doctoral degree programmes can find their occupation especially in research laboratories, yet they are also fully equipped to work in diagnostic laboratories focusing on the disciplines that are a part of their study programme. Of major significance is the possibility of working in the academic environment, as well as in the commercial sector for subjects focused on medical laboratory work.
