Pharmacology

The aim of the study program is to prepare an independent pharmacologist in the field of experimental, translation, reversal or applied clinical research, or alternatively, independent academic who will apply his / her knowledge and experience in the field of education.

Entry Requirements for Candidates

Completed Master's degree in fields related to the pharmacological research on:

Medical faculty or Pharmaceutical or Veterinary faculty or faculty or university disciplines: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Psychology, or Zoology - with obligatory additional study and successful examination of human pathological physiology.

Suggested topics of the dissertation:

Determination of expression of the brain neurotransmitter receptors in an animal model of addiction to psychotropic substances

Changes in the receptor systems of the brain under the influence of a substance dependence

Reactivity of brain neurotransmitter systems on selected antidepressants

Effects of selected antipsychotics in behavioural animal models

Effects of cannabinoid system ligands in animal models in vivo

Effects of modulators of activity of endocannabinoid system in animal models in vivo

The role of glutamatergic system in animal model of comorbidity of depression and drug dependence

The impact of genetic polymorphism of cytochromes P450 in pharmacotherapy

Practical training

The PhD student (according to the Ph.D topic) works with experimental animals or other appropriate laboratory or research methods supervised by the supervisor, later also independently.

During the course of study, the doctoral student, with the support of a supervisor, will apply for the scholarships offered for professional internships and stays relevant to the subject of the dissertation.

According to his / her possibilities and according to his / her study plan, the doctoral student participates to a limited extent in the teaching of undergraduate students of the Faculty of Medicine.

Further rules and conditions of the curriculum

Within 1 year from admission to the DSP in cooperation with the supervisor, the student presents the Branch committee for doctoral study in Pharmacology (further- “Branch committee”), other students and academic staff of the Institute of Pharmacology his project - thesis of dissertation. Branch committee then discuss with the student thesis project and methods, respectively, and proposes changes in the methodology of the project.

During the study, the doctoral candidate will report partial results of his dissertation by presentation at both national and international conferences (for this purpose applications for the grant support are expected to be submitted).

During the study, the doctoral student will be supported by a supervisor to apply for scholarships offered to professional internships relevant to the topic of the dissertation.

2 years after the adoption of the DSP: obligation to present to supervisor and Branch committee a manuscript (might be a review paper), which submits for publication in scientific journals (at least Czech / Slovak scientific periodical).

The latest in the fourth year of study, the student should present his/her own experimental results, which are suitable for publication in a journal with IF.

Branch committee will recommend to continue only to the students who have published their own results in periodical with IF or their article was accepted for publication in a periodical with an IF (1st author). If the student fails to comply with the timeframes set rules above, Branch committee propose, after discussion with the supervisor, discontinuation or termination of the PhD studies.

The final condition of the successful PhD student is the preparation and successful defense of a dissertation in the final year of study.

Teaching duties in the course of Pharmacology taught at various fields at the Faculty of Medicine (in accordance with the Study Regulations MU).

Requirements for the State Doctoral Examination of Pharmacology:

Oral defense of knowledge within the scope of knowledge of modern pharmacology (according to the recommended literature) before at least five-member examination committee comprised of experts from MU and at least two members from other bodies (outside MU).

Graduates of doctoral program find application in science and research in the biomedical field, more specifically in basic experimental, molecular or clinical pharmacology disciplines. Graduates are able to work individually as researchers, are able to apply for a grant to national or even international grant agencies, to publish their results in the international scientific impacted journals, to present the results of their work at an international conferences.

Graduates may find application as a university assistant in the field of pharmacology and related fields, may also find application in various positions (especially research, development, as a consultant) in the pharmaceutical industry).
