Description | Many of physiological processes in human testes is related to the metabolism of homocysteine and related vitamins. Folate plays an important role in the reproduction and the treatment with folate antagonists impairs the reproductive functions in men. Low seminal plasma folate concentrations are associated with low sperm density and sperm count. Insufficient intake of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid impairs the Hcy metabolism and causes hyperhomocysteinemia which is associated with the increased production of ROS, decreases the bioavailability of NO and enhances the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Excessive oxidative stress induces sperm DNA damage and adversely influences spermatozoa function during fertilization and early embryo development. The aim of study was to measure seminal fluid concentrations of Hcy, vitamin B12 and folates in a sample of Czech males and determine the correlations between them and age and semen variables. The study included 271 men, 18-58 years of age. For the part of statistical evaluation, they were divided into the 6 groups according to the semen examination, which was realised according to the WHO guidelines. We found significant correlations between concentration of B12 and both folate and Hcy and also age, sperm count, motility, and abnormal head forms. The concentration of folate correlated with B12, sperm count, motility, and abnormal head and neck forms. We also found significant differences in Hcy and vitamins values among the groups of patients. |
