Description During the microbiological examination of the river water nine Aeromonas strains having a brown exopigment were isolated. These brown-pigmented eromonads were characterized by the phenotyping, fatty acid methyl ester analysis and ribotyping. All methods identically confirmed that the group of brown pigmented aeromonads is quite heterogeneous. Apart from the Aeromonas media taxon, the brown pigmented aeromonads in river water were represented also by strains of Aeromonas allosaccharophila and Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. pectinolytica.
