Description In a cross-test, we examined 53 strains of genus Yersinia agains each other as potencial producers of specific antibacterial agents (bacteriophages, bacteriocin, microcins) and as potential sensitive indicators for them. We tested 6 strains of Yersinia spp. (Y. aldovae, Y. intermedia, Y. frederiksenii, Y. kristensenii, Y. rohdei. Y. ruckeri) generally considered to be nonpathogenic and environmental. Six strains (11 %) produced bacteriocins (one of Y. frederiksenii, one of Y. intermedia, four of Y. ruckeri) and two bacteriophages (4 %, both of Y. kristensenii). Bacteriocins were characterised by several methods. No positive PCR products were found suggesting that the identified bacteriocins may represent novel types. Plasmid DNA of Y. frederiksenii was subjected to transposon Tn7 insertion and was transformed to electrocompetent cells of E. coli DH10B. Recombinant plasmid DNA was sequenced and sequences related to Col-plasmids as well as unique sequences were found.
