Description Schizophrenia is associated with cognitive functions impairment deficits, especially with deficits of concentration, memory and executive functions. Which memory functions specifically are impaired in schizophrenia remains to be established. Impaired memory is regarded as a trait factor rather than a state factor of schizophrenia. Impaired memory consolidation and encoding function are associated with dysfunction of the hippocampus and the temporal lobe. The aim of the trial was to compare the level of hippocampal activation during a memory test between healthy volunteers and first-episode and chronic-form schizophrenic patients. In comparison with a control group, no impaired memory encoding has been demonstrated in first episode schizophrenic patients.
