Description The sample of 5172 females and 4770 their male partners, participants on research ELSPAC, have answered questions which describe various forms of sexual attacks. The list of situations includes both these with and without contact of sex organs. He or she answered, whether somebody did behave this way toward him/her, who was this person and how old was the respondent when this situation has happened the first time. Simultaneously the sexual abuse was directly asked. We have compared the answers on both behaviour descriptive and direct question on sexual abuse. We have found important differences with respect to the way of questioning. Only 15 % of women and 7 % of men who were victims of sexual attack with contact answered yes the question whether they were anytime sexually abused. In the case of attack without contact these percentages are still less 1,9 % women and 2 % men. We can infer that the answers fit in the case of strong negative emotions associated with the situation. We can conclude that the concept sexual abuse as used by individuals do not fit its general, rather normative understanding. Result of research on sexual abuse is strongly dependent on whether we choose our or her/his understanding of sexual abuse. In the first case we present respondents with any descriptions of behaviour we can understand the sexual abuse, in the second we can directly ask whether he or she was sexually abused. From our point of view, both ways of research are unsatisfactory and should be combined.
