Description Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was created as a comprehensive program for clients with borderline personality disorder by American psychologist Marsha M. Linehan. The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder is understood by DBT in the same way as it is defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association in its 4th revision, but the criteria are assembled into logical units corresponding to the biosocial theory of borderline disorder. An important philosophical basis for DBT is dialectics and also Zen Buddhism. DBT is significantly influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). DBT consists of four core modules - individual therapy, group skills training, telephone coaching and a consultation team. DBT has been shown to be effective in several randomized controlled trials, particularly for women with borderline disorder who exhibit self-harm and suicidal ideation.
