Citation
Description In this article one of the less known medieval battles is described - the battle of Dyrrachion (1081). This battle was the result of invasion of the south-Italian Normans led by Robert Guiscard on the Balkan territories of the Byzantine Empire which was then in the period of deep crisis. In spite of this fact the emperor Alexios Komnenos attempted to stop the Normans but thanks to various factors he last the battle. The Byzantines were thus obliged to continue their defensive fighting until 1085 when Robert Guiscard died and the Norman threat dissipated quickly.
