Description Elbow dislocation is the second most common major joint dislocation in adults. With a view to dislocation frequency and the risk of posttraumatic functional limitations, the authors present a brief review of acute elbow dislocations. Initially, they introduce the elbow anatomy, biomechanics, etiopathogenesis and the classification of elbow dislocations. Clinical symptoms and examination methods used to determine the aforementioned diagnosis are described. Treatment options for different forms of elbow dislocations are further presented. Finally, the authors provide an overview of patients treated for acute elbow dislocation at the Trauma Surgery Department (University Hospital Brno) from January 2008 to August 2011.
