Prof. Barbara Ukropcová, MD, PhD: Lifestyle interventions in prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive deficits associated with aging: effectiveness and mechanisms.
Nonpharmacological interventions represent an effective prevention strategy of aging-associated cognitive decline and preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. Physical exercise, nutritional counselling, cognitive training and management of cardiometabolic risk factors represent the cornerstone of the interventions, however, the results of clinical studies are inconclusive, rising the need for identification of factors responsible for the effectiveness of the programs. Physical exercise is one of the factors with the greatest potential to enhance brain plasticity and cognitive functions. Identification of the molecular mechanisms of exercise-induced benefits can provide us with better understanding of human physiology as well as with biomarkers for monitoring treatment efficiency.
