Course I – Critical Conditions in Intensive Care
On 6 December 2021, the FM MU Simulation Centre hosted the last course of the year, namely in the series dedicated to postgraduate medical education. The course focused on critical conditions in intensive care.
Despite the difficult situation in the COVID-19 pandemic, the course was attended by nine participants from several departments from all over the Czech Republic. Personally, it was staffed by qualified lecturers from SIMU FM MU. Specifically, there was MUDr. Milan Kratochvíl, EDIC, MUDr. Jan Stašek, EDIC, MUDr. Marek Kovář, and MUDr. Jan Maláska, Ph.D., EDIC. Such a complex course could not have occurred without the excellent technical support of a team of technicians led by SIMU director, Mgr. Jan Dvořáček, Dis. and AV technicians led by Ing. Jiří Travěnec. Methodologically, the Critical Conditions in Intensive Care was conducted by MUDr. Jana Djakow, Ph.D. to improve skills during debriefing. The organisers were Prof. MUDr. Petr Štourač, Ph.D. – Head of the Department of Simulation Medicine of the FM MU, and his vice-head, doc. MUDr. Martina Kosinová, Ph.D. The course guarantor was MUDr. Jan Maláska, Ph.D., EDIC.
At the beginning of the course, the participants were shown around the SIMU MF MUNI department and models.
Then, they had the opportunity to practice complex situations in specific scenarios. These were 11 in total, plus three hands-on workshops (difficult airways management, bedside ultrasound, and difficult ventilation simulator). The scenarios were situated in the intensive care environment and situations outside ICU that an intensive care physician deals with in their routine practice, e.g. consultations, handover and transport of a patient from the operating theatre, etc. The course aimed to improve the participants' skills in crisis situations and mainly in so-called non-technical skills they might experience, such as in intensive care units.
At the end of the course, the participants met with the lecturers, organisers and guarantors in the pleasant environment of SIMU to discuss the training, share their feelings, and give feedback to each other. Such meetings are vital for future courses. Afterwards, the participants received their certificates on successful completion. The event was unique because it was the first of its kind in the Czech Republic.
We look forward to seeing you at the subsequent courses in 2022.
