XIV AKUTNĚ.CZ Conference
On Saturday, 18 November 2022, the 14th AKUTNĚ.CZ conference took place at the Faculty of Medicine of MU, attended by 973 students, doctors and nurses.
The conference programme consisted of more than 60 lectures and 23 practical workshops. The Institute of Simulation Medicine and the Simulation Centre sponsored the part of the programme dedicated to simulation medicine.
From the report on the portal AKUTNE.CZ.
The programme dedicated to simulation medicine was opened by the Head of the Institute of Simulation Medicine, Prof. Štourač. The opening lecture was given by Dr Šípek (Prague), who started by outlining the nature and benefits of in situ simulation. Using the example of an observational study from New Zealand, he pointed out possible safety threats that need to be worked on in simulation – individual and team factors. In the next part of his presentation, he showed the flow of the in-situ simulation prepared by their team. He briefly familiarised the audience with the most common safety gaps, such as the administration of a defibrillation discharge by ICU doctors who are not specialised in intensive care medicine. Dr Vafková (Department of Simulation Medicine, FM MU) took the floor with her lecture on clinical debriefing. She recalled the theory of adult learning that can be applied to simulations. She pointed out that Covid-19 had contributed significantly to the development and need for debriefing. She concluded by saying that not only simulation itself but any lived experience can be an opportunity to enrich one's practice. The session was continued by Dr Šimeček (Prague), who introduced the Section of Simulation Medicine at KARIM FN Motol and its training, which doctors are obliged to undergo in their pre-testing training at their workplace. He explained that each simulation has a specific educational objective, medical or technical. Finally, he evaluated their five years at KARIM and outlined their future goals. The last part of the session on simulation medicine was opened by the head of audiovisual technicians of SIMU in Brno, Ing. Travěnec (Simulation Centre of FM MU). He described extensively the structure and staffing of SIMU, the scope of its work and the possibilities offered. In the next part of the lecture, he discussed 3D printing and its use in simulation medicine. He concluded with an overview of the Timer application, which is able to synchronize learning across multiple groups.
The second block, closely related to the teaching in the FM MU Simulation Centre, Students to themselves..., was opened by Prof. Štourač. He stressed the importance of finding young enthusiastic students as an important part of the future for clinical disciplines. The first lecture of the block was given by Dr Harazim (KDAR FN Brno and FM MU), summarizing the most important things in 15 years of AKUTNE.CZ portal. Among the main successful programmes, she mentioned The Scholar Foundation to support students, Acute Wednesdays developed during the covid era, the Emergency Medicine Course, the organization of the Monitoring Articles section, reports from professional events and especially the AKUTNE.CZ interactive algorithms, which have a reputation not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. At the end of the lecture, she summarized what the Akutne.cz portal means to Dr Harazim herself, namely the sense of working for others, inspiration for growth, the power of collaboration and a lot of fun in a passionate team. The second lecture was followed by Dr Anton (GPK FN Brno and FM MU), who introduced the Startgyn programme designed especially for 5th and 6th year students of FM MU. The main advantage of the programme is the individual approach and insight into the field and practice. It allows them to participate in normal operations, e.g. in services, emergency rooms, and thus get more practice than in standard teaching. Their goal in further improving and expanding the programme is to better evaluate the teaching, improve the simulations, and expand the workshops for the students. The session continued with doc. Jabandžiev (PeK FN Brno and FM MU), where he shared with the audience the evaluation and basic information of the new Pedstart programme in the teaching of paediatrics at FM MU, which was launched in September this year on the basis of the expansion of teaching to the Simulation Centre. This programme allows students to practise basic clinical skills such as physical examination and history taking in a paediatric patient, providing intraosseous access, and then practising them on high-fidelity simulations. In the future, they plan to further develop the potential of the Simulation Centre in the teaching of Paediatrics, for example with the Neostart programme focusing on newborn care. The final message of the Students for Ourselves block was concluded by Dr Prokopová (KARIM FN Brno and FM MU, Department of Simulation Medicine FM MU), with her lecture on the sustainability of the Student as a Teacher programme at FM MU. The doctor summarized the main advantages of involving students as lecturers in teaching. These programmes offer students individual access and more effective implementation of simulation medicine, deepen students' knowledge, train soft-skills for practice and give more detailed feedback. At the end of the session, the doctor summarised the importance of motivation, a peer-to-peer approach and especially putting enough time and enthusiasm into training.
Modern teaching methods were also present in the main programme of the medical section in the Lecture Hall, where the whole congress was opened by a lecture Implementation of Modern Methods of Medical Education in the Hands of a Non-Medical Professional of the renowned AKUTNE.CZ Personality, doc. Schwarz. As an expert, who was at the birth of the portal AKUTNE.CZ, he presented the objectives of the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses, which deals, among other things, with studies and virtual case studies presented in an interesting and appealing form. He also stressed the importance and advantages of collaborative style of teaching, especially TBL (Team Based Learning), where besides the so-called content expert, an academic with knowledge of the subject, the teaching is conducted by a facilitator, a non-medical person trained to conduct teaching in the form of TBL. Towards the end of the communication, he introduced us to a checklist for the facilitator on how to conduct teaching properly.
Next year's AKUTNE.CZ conference will be held again at the FM MU on 25 November 2023, and SIMU will certainly be there again!
