Ultrasound as a Novelty in Our Courses at SIMU
Here we go! The latest novelty in SIMU FM MU postgraduate continuing education for 2022: Ultrasound in Critical Conditions course.
It is a Monday morning in December and after a short opening of the course organizer in the person of the deputy head of the Institute of Simulation Medicine, doc. Kosinová and the introduction of the course guarantor Dr Maláska, the eight participants get acquainted with the ultrasound devices and the basic setup under the guidance of Dr Štouračová. This is the first and last lesson where all participants are together, as they will later learn in smaller groups or pairs.
After a short coffee break, the course participants go through the first lesson on vascular entry cannulation and needle-probe coordination. In parallel, an abdominal ultrasound examination is performed in the FAST protocol on an actor and a US Mentor simulator capable of realistically simulating various pathologies, without the need to provide large amounts of artificial blood or polytraumatised actors. The above-standard individual approach requires the involvement of all course lecturers, and the already mentioned Dr Štouračová and Dr Maláska are joined by Dr Kratochvíl, Dr Stašek and Dr Kovář.
After lunch, participants will have further hands-on sessions on an actor and simulator, focusing on basic bedside echocardiography in FATE mode and lung ultrasound examination and its involvement in the BLUE protocol. In parallel, we use high-fidelity simulations to consolidate the acquired knowledge and application of ultrasound in clinical scenarios. Here, we must not forget to thank the SIMU technicians without whom this course would not have been possible.
The main aim of the course was to gain basic knowledge of point-of-care use of ultrasound and most importantly to encourage participants to use it in clinical practice. From the feedback, we learn that this objective was met. Each of the participants and trainers went home with a clear motto: "Ultrasound is just plain awesome!"
And if you enjoy ultrasound as much as we do, registration is now open for the next course in June 2023. We look forward to seeing you there.
