Description | In patients with myocardial infarction or heart failure oxidative stress may contribute to myocyte apoptosis, decrease nitric oxide bioavailability or have direct negative inotropic effect. The aim of the study was to determine levels of parameters of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, TNFalfa) and antioxidants (vitamins A and E, uric acid) and their relation to the extent of myocardial infarction and heart failure in patients with STEMI. Cohort of 179 subjects consecutively admitted to the CCU (from 10/2005 to 10/2008) with first STEMI, treated by PCI. Both lipid peroxidation (MDA) and activated macrophages (TNFalfa) are involved in acute STEMI patients. Levels of vitamin A and E correspond with the extent of lipid peroxidation and negatively with macrophage activation, respectively, but endogenous antioxidant uric acid does not. Surprisingly, no effects of smoking or diabetes mellitus were observed on the evaluated parameters of oxidative stress. |
