Neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Lewy body diseases (LBDs, present significant healthcare challenges by affecting millions globally and impairing cognitive functions critically. Working memory (WM) deficits, a central component of dysexecutive syndrome seen in LBD patients, contribute to LBD patients ability to lead an independent life. This study introduces an innovative approach to mitigating WM deficits through non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS). By leveraging various transcranial electric stimulation (tES) protocols, we aim to unravel the involvement of specific cortical and subcortical brain areas in WM and identify optimal neuromodulation strategies to improve WM in LBD patients. Age-matched individuals will serve as a control group to assess specificity of the modulatory aftereffects in the patient population. Our goal is to enhance mechanistic understanding of early cognitive dysfunction found in patients with LBDs. Results from our project may accelerate further research focusing on mitigating cognitive deficits by personalized home-based long-term tES.
