1880 - Billings [physician and director of the Army Surgeon General’s library] developed the idea of using cards for the 1880 and 1890 census.
1882 - Hollerith developed paper card with 288 punch holes [same size as dollar bill].
1890 - Census was processed in one month using 56 of Hollerith’s machines.
