Income tax changes

effective from 1.1.2024

Newly established employee contribution to sickness insurance

Since January, employees have been paying higher contributions on their wages. The social security contribution has increased by 0.6% for sickness insurance and now amounts to 7.1% of the assessment base (gross wages). The health insurance contribution remains unchanged (4.5% of the assessment base).

Cancellation of tax rebates and exemptions

  1. The tax credit for students, i.e. for self-study, which was used by working students up to the age of 26 or up to the age of 28 for full-time doctoral studies, has ended.
  2. The conditions for claiming the spouse tax credit have also changed. As these conditions only apply to the 2024 tax year, the change will only be reflected in the 2024 tax return (annual tax return). It will now only be possible to claim the tax credit if the spouse cares for a child under the age of 3.
    • The tax credit amount remains unchanged, and it will still be CZK 24,840 (double for disabled - PWD/P persons).
    • The income limit is also unchanged, remaining at CZK 68,000 per year.
  3. The tax deduction for contributions to trade unions has also been abolished.

Changes in the area of temporary employment (Agreements "DPP", "DPČ")

External workers with a contract of employment ("DPP") or a contract of employment (" DPČ") will be entitled to holiday pay from January 2024 if the following conditions are met:

  • the duration of the agreement is at least 4 weeks (28 days)
  • at least 80 hours of work.

The practical implementation of the use of leave at MU is under preparation and will be implemented electronically in INET, we will inform you about the launch.

From 1 July 2024 there is an approved legislative change to the limits for premium deductions for the DPP. Unfortunately at this time it is unclear whether the approved change will actually come into effect, we will keep you updated on any progress.
